firebreaks maintenance in Rawa Kadut

May 10-15: Another week of reforestation

As our previous activities, this week started with continuing to maintain our firebreak arsenal, which could protect our trees from catching fire in the upcoming dry season. We clean the reeds, checked for the pest, and watering the trees.

Another thing we do during the week was replanting crops in Rawa Kadut. As many as 50 trees were replanted back, to substitute damaged trees or those that are likely to perish.

Last but not least, we held a meeting with Way Kambas National Park Office concerning monitoring and evaluation of our reforestation program in Rawa Kadut.

May 2-8: A new hope

This week we found out that our successor plants has started to show its color. Green and healthy as a newborn. In Rawa Kadut, most of our permanent trees are blooming and it is expected to bring impacts to land cover in Way Kambas in the next two or three years, which means the land would be covered with greenness. The term is under one condition for sure: Our prediction is applied as long as there is no fire in Rawa Kadut.

Our plants such as grew healthily up to noticeable size. A few centimeters up from the ground or ranging from 50 to 150 centimeters. Thousands has shown similar progress. However, we also discovered some of damaged trees caused by wildlife during monitoring process. Our guess is that one or two deers had eaten them.

Nevertheless, most of our plants in Rawa Kadut are indeed potential animal feed. Moreover, speaking of our initial purpose of reforestation, this condition is a small hint of plausible natural forest life.

In addition, the maintenance of firebreaks kept going. As our previous commitment, this is important as to welcome the upcoming summer and likely annual fire.

reservoir process in rawa kadut camp, way kambas

April 24-30: The reservoir

The dry season is inching closer, meaning that the annual fire will eventually come to this park, just like the previous years. Therefore, to protect our park, this week we started to build a reservoir for water provision in fighting the Red Flower.

The reservoir is planned to be as long as 15 meters with 2 meters width and 1 meter of depth. The size is indeed not as large as reservoir in general, more like a pond in fact. We started by scheming the location of the reservoir, which then decided to be in the front of Rawa Kadut camp. Four of Auriga’s team then started digging the soul. However, our activity this week was rather obscured by the rain.

The reservoir is also anticipated for watering our plants in Rawa Kadut. It is by experience that the lack of water can leave us with dried or even dead trees.

We hope this project will finish as soon as possible.
